What Chipotle Rewards actually pays

Chipotle Rewards is a points program with a flat earn rate and one headline redemption. You collect 10 points for every eligible dollar, and 1,625 points buys a free entree. That means $162.50 of qualifying spending returns roughly $9.79 of food, an effective rate close to 6.0 percent. Nothing on the promo code side of this site comes near that as a repeatable saving.

The program was rebuilt on 13 April 2026 under the name Rewards on Repeat. Curt Garner, Chipotle president and chief strategy officer, said at the relaunch that Rewards drives a significant portion of sales and connects the company with more than 21 million active members. Nearly 90 percent of Chipotle digital transactions are linked to a Rewards account, against roughly 20 percent of in restaurant transactions. That gap explains why public promo codes have thinned out. The discounting moved to where the accounts are.

Tax and tip do not earn points. A receipt total of $12 on a $9.79 entree earns on the $9.79, not the $12. Over a year that gap costs a regular customer several hundred points.

Freepotle, and why it changed the maths

Freepotle is the monthly free food drop Chipotle brought back with the relaunch. A reward appears in the Rewards tab of the account, and the company committed to doing this every month rather than as an occasional campaign. Past drops have covered guacamole at $2.95, queso blanco at $2.95 and chips at $2.25. Some redeem on their own. Others need a qualifying purchase of around $5 attached.

Twelve drops a year at an average of $2.60 is roughly $31.20 of food that costs nothing beyond opening the app when the notification arrives. That is the single most overlooked number in Chipotle discounting, and it needs no code, no minimum and no luck.

Every member benefit, listed

Points on every eligible dollar

Ten points per dollar on app, website and scanned in store purchases. Tax and tip earn nothing, so a $9.79 entree with tax returns 98 points rather than the number on the receipt total.

Freepotle monthly drops

Free rewards land in member accounts every month since the April 2026 relaunch. Some redeem on their own, others attach to a qualifying purchase of about $5.

A birthday reward you choose

Guacamole, queso blanco, chips or a fountain drink, redeemable inside a 30 day window rather than on the day itself.

The Rewards Exchange

Trade points for half price entrees, group Build Your Own options and bundled meals instead of saving to the full 1,625.

Bonus point days

Multiplier days run through campaigns such as Summer of Extras, which lifted the standard rate for members between 1 June and 31 August 2026.

Early access to new items

Menu launches open to members first, which is also when the largest targeted offers tend to appear in accounts.

$9.79 per chicken entree means about 6 visits a month at this level.

Points earned each month 600
Weeks to a free entree 12
Free entrees per year 4.4
Value returned per year $43

Freepotle drops, the birthday reward and bonus point days sit on top of this figure and are not counted here.

Spending points well

What each redemption is worth

Points buy different things at different rates. Redeeming against the most expensive item on the order is the only reliable way to get more out of the same balance.

Redemption Menu value Worth knowing
Free entree $9.79 The headline redemption at 1,625 points
Half price entree $5.84 Best value when redeemed against steak or barbacoa
Chips and guacamole $5.20 A common exchange listing and a frequent Freepotle drop
Side of queso blanco $2.95 The same value as the top birthday pick
Fountain drink $3.05 The weakest use of points on the list

Menu values are national averages. Exchange listings rotate, so the set available in your account this month will not match next month exactly.

The technical detail most guides skip

Point expiry changed at the relaunch. A balance now stays alive for 365 days from the last qualifying purchase, up from the previous six month window. This is an inactivity clock rather than a hard expiry on each point, so a single order a year protects an entire balance. Accounts that lapse are almost always forgotten accounts.

Redeemed offers carry their own clock. Once you pull a reward out of the exchange it commonly holds for 60 days, and a Freepotle drop can run shorter than that. The practical consequence is that redeeming early costs you nothing while redeeming speculatively can. Leave points banked until the order you want to spend them on is in front of you.

Scanning matters in store. The app has to be scanned before payment is taken, not after, and a receipt cannot be added retroactively at the counter. On digital orders the points attach automatically because the order is already tied to the account. That difference is why in restaurant transactions sit near 20 percent Rewards attachment while digital sits near 90.

One redemption applies per order, and it occupies the same slot a promo code would. If you hold a half price entree offer and a $4.00 off code at the same time, run the maths before choosing: on a $11.68 steak entree the half price offer returns $5.84, so the code loses. On a small order it can win.

Is the program worth joining

For anyone eating at Chipotle more than once a month, yes, and it is not close. A customer buying 17 chicken entrees reaches a free one on points alone, then adds twelve Freepotle drops and a birthday reward on top. A customer visiting twice a year gets almost nothing from the points but still collects the birthday reward, which costs nothing to claim.

The one real cost is data. Chipotle uses the account to target offers, which is the whole point of the model from its side. Anyone uncomfortable with that trade is better served by the free guacamole rule on vegetarian orders and by ordering direct rather than through a marketplace, neither of which needs an account. Both are covered on the free guac page and the delivery page.

Chipotle Rewards: questions people ask

How many points is a free entree at Chipotle?

A free entree costs 1,625 points, and you earn 10 points for every eligible dollar. That works out to roughly $162.50 of spending, or about seventeen chicken entrees at the $9.79 average. The Rewards Exchange also lists smaller redemptions such as half off an entree for fewer points.

What is Freepotle?

Freepotle is Chipotle’s recurring free food promotion, brought back with the Rewards on Repeat relaunch on 13 April 2026. Free rewards drop into member accounts every month. Some redeem on their own and others need a qualifying purchase of around $5.

Do Chipotle points expire?

Points expire after 365 days without a qualifying purchase. That window doubled in April 2026, up from the previous six months. One order a year is enough to keep a balance alive, so a lapsed account is usually a forgotten account rather than an unlucky one.

Does Chipotle give free food on your first order?

Joining Rewards has come with a free side, commonly guacamole or chips, on the first qualifying order. The exact gift changes with the campaign running when you sign up, so check the Rewards tab straight after creating the account rather than assuming it is guac.

Rewards beats every code on this site

Points, monthly drops and a birthday pick add up to more than any public promo code Chipotle has issued in the past two years. Joining costs nothing.
