Gift cards are the only Chipotle product that goes on sale

Chipotle does not discount its menu in advance. It discounts its gift cards. The recurring shape is a bonus promotion, where buying a card of a set value returns extra value on top rather than taking a percentage off the price. Those promotions cluster around Black Friday and run through December, which makes November the one month of the year when Chipotle food can be bought below face value with certainty.

The reason this matters more than any promo code is that the saving is permanent and unrestricted. A bonus card has no minimum order, no item exclusions, no region lock and no expiry on the value. It behaves like cash at Chipotle, and it stacks with everything else because payment and discount are separate layers.

Card type How it arrives Worth knowing
Digital e-gift card Email, usually within minutes Carries the card number and PIN in the delivery email. The format Chipotle uses for its own giveaways
Physical gift card Post, or bought in restaurant PIN sits under a scratch panel on the back. Needs activating at the till when bought in person
Free entree card Issued through promotions Covers one entree rather than a dollar value. The teacher and healthcare giveaway used this format
Bulk or corporate cards Ordered through the business portal Volume ordering for employee rewards, with its own minimums and lead times
The only real stack

Combining a gift card, a code and points

Chipotle accepts one promotional code per order. A gift card is not a promotional code, which is what makes this sequence work where every other stacking attempt fails.

1

Buy during a bonus promotion

Chipotle runs buy a card and get extra value promotions around Black Friday and through December. That bonus is the only genuine discount on Chipotle food that is available in advance.

2

Apply any code or reward first

A promo code or a redeemed Rewards offer occupies one slot on the order. Apply it before payment so the discount lands on the subtotal.

3

Pay with the gift card

A gift card is a payment method rather than a discount, so it does not compete with the code. Any leftover balance stays on the card.

4

Let the order earn points

The order still earns 10 points per dollar because points attach to the purchase, not the payment type. A $9.79 entree earns roughly 98 points.

Points attach to the purchase, not to the payment method. Paying with a gift card earns the same 10 points per dollar as paying with a card, so a bonus card effectively buys points at a discount as well as buying food at one.

Checking a balance, and what to do when it reads zero

Balances are checked on the gift card page at chipotle.com using the card number and the PIN. Digital cards carry both in the delivery email. Physical cards carry the PIN under a scratch panel on the back, and that panel is the source of most balance problems, because scratching it too hard removes a character along with the coating.

A card reading zero on its first use is almost always a mistyped PIN rather than an empty card. Chipotle returns the same message for an invalid PIN as for a spent card, which is unhelpful and consistent. Re enter both numbers carefully, watching for a zero read as the letter O. A physical card bought in a restaurant also has to be activated at the till, so a card that was handed over without being scanned carries no value at all.

If the numbers are right and the balance is genuinely gone, Chipotle customer support is the only route. Keep the purchase receipt, because a card cannot be traced without it.

Using a card on each ordering channel

Gift cards work on the Chipotle app, on chipotle.com and in restaurant. They do not work on DoorDash, Uber Eats or any other marketplace, because those platforms process their own payments. That is another argument for ordering direct, on top of the menu markup covered on the delivery page.

On a digital order, add the card under the payment section at checkout. If the balance does not cover the total, Chipotle takes the remainder from a second payment method rather than rejecting the order. In restaurant, hand the card over at payment and scan the Rewards app first, in that order, since scanning after payment does not register the points.

The free entree card format

Chipotle uses a separate card type for promotions that covers one entree rather than a dollar value. The 2026 teacher and healthcare giveaway used this format, distributing up to 200,000 free entree e-gift cards worth as much as $2 million between 28 April and 12 May, with employment confirmed through ID.me.

These behave differently to a value card. They cover a single entree at any protein, which makes redeeming against steak or barbacoa at $11.68 worth $1.89 more than redeeming against chicken. They also carry their own expiry, unlike value cards. The deals calendar lists when these giveaways run.

Buying for someone else

Digital cards send to an email address with a chosen delivery date, which makes them workable as a last minute gift in a way physical cards are not. There is no fee on either format and no expiry on the value, so the only real decision is timing. Buying in late November during a bonus promotion and sending in December costs less than buying in December, for exactly the same card.

Gift Cards: questions people ask

Do Chipotle gift cards ever go on sale?

Chipotle runs bonus card promotions rather than straight discounts, usually around Black Friday and through December. The shape is buy a card of a set value and receive extra value back. Because the eventual purchase still earns Rewards points, this is one of the few offers that genuinely stacks.

How do you check a Chipotle gift card balance?

Use the gift card page on chipotle.com with the card number and the PIN from the back of the card. Digital cards carry both in the delivery email. If the balance reads zero on a card you have not used, the PIN was probably mistyped rather than the card being empty.

Can you use a gift card and a promo code together?

Yes. A gift card is a payment method, not a discount, so it does not occupy the single promo code slot. Apply the code first, then pay the remaining balance with the card. Any leftover value stays on the card for the next order.
